  • What We Make

    Baking bread the right way

    We've been baking our bread by the traditional sponge and dough method since 1951. This takes 18 hours, so it's lucky that we are a family of early risers!

    We make all of our own dough from scratch every morning, so we can safely say that there's nowt much fresher than a Gilchrist loaf in these parts.

    White bread – our best quality white flour makes the fluffiest white loaves

    Wholemeal – made from the whole grain with nowt taken out

    Granary – loaves with the good bits left in, made with quality malted flour and seeds

    Fruit tea cake – made with rich dough and loaded with the best fruit

    Vienna cake – totally fat-free and made with a little sugar and skimmed milk

     

    Josie's homemade cakes

    Our Josie is the member of our family with the sweet tooth. From the finest chubby rogues to the stickiest Bakewell tarts – teatime treats are her speciality!

    Derek's 'meal in a sandwich'

    For young Derek, it's always been the 'meal in a sandwich' that hits the spot. From roast beef, roast chicken or pie and peas, his specials will leave you feeling satisfied.

    Try his Christmas turkey with all the trimmings this festive season.

    Tearooms and cafes

    Pull-up a chair, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and tuck into hot sandwiches filled with bacon, eggs, sausages, lettuce and tomatoes.

    We have cafes and tearooms at our bakeries in Harehills, Stainburn and Boroughbridge.
